Why do many students fail to get 7 or 7+ in IELTS Speaking?

Do you think the reasons below are preventing you from getting a Band 7 and above?

Fluency and Coherence

The main reasons why candidates would get a Band 6 for Fluency and Coherence.

  • They hesitate a lot while thinking about words or grammar. Their hesitation is often in the middle of a phrase or sentence.

  • Their coherence is lost at times as a result of hesitation and self-correction, especially in Part 2 and 3.

  • They tend to overuse "and", "so", "but", "when", "because", rather than use a variety of connecting words.

  • They sometimes manage to link and organise their ideas well, but not always.

Lexical resource

The main reasons why candidates would get a Band 6 for Lexical resource.

  • Candidates do not use vocabulary flexibly to discuss a variety of topics. Their vocabulary resource tends to be quite simple. To get a Band 7 for Lexical Resource, they need to use less common vocabulary and be aware of style and collocation.

  • There are sometimes inaccuracies in word choice and collocation.

  • Candidates are generally able to paraphrase successfully.

Grammatical range and accuracy

The main reasons why candidates would get a Band 6 for Grammatical range and accuracy.

  • Candidates produce a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there is limited flexibility. To get a Band 7 for Grammatical range and accuracy, they need to be able to use a range of complex structures with some flexibility.

  • Candidates are often incorrect with verb tenses, leave out words such as articles and verbs. There tend to be errors in subject-verb agreement as well. To get a Band 7 for Grammatical range and accuracy, they need to frequently produce error-free sentences.

Pronunciation

The main reasons why candidates would get a Band 6 for Pronunciation.

  • Mispronunciation of individual words or sounds causes lack of clarity.

  • Rhythm is sometimes affected, especially when candidates hesitate.

  • Candidates can generally be understood throughout the Speaking test.
